What date is easter sunday this year(2010)?
Today is ash wednesday..When i was a kid i would go to the church to put the ash on my forehead but it did not really do anything for me or give me any luck even now in life as i got cut from the 10th grade baseball team..
What is the point of it?

What is the significance of “Ash Wednesday”?
I’m going to a funeral on Thursday, but when I heard of the death I had thought it would be tomorrow, which got me thinking.

Is it ever appropriate to wear ashes to a funeral? I’m not sure the Catholic church or any of the other denominations that observe Ash Wednesday even do funerals on Ash Wednesday, but assuming they do, is it more appropriate at a funeral in a denomination of Christianity that observes Ash Wednesday and less appropriate at either one that doesn’t or a Jewish or other religion funeral?

I just feel like….you’re already at a funeral. It just seems morbid to bring “Remember, O man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.” into the picture, too.

So hypothetical question – your religion observes Ash Wednesday, you have a funeral to go to, and because of it the only time you can get ashes is beforehand. Do you skip ashes that year or is it okay?

(I would probably just skip the ashes or go and then shower before the funeral, to be honest, but I’ll let you guys weigh in.)

Hypothetical: Is it ever appropriate to wear ashes to a funeral?
I know for lent that the Roman Catholics must fast on Ash Wednesday and every Friday; no meats and only eat one full meal.
-Do Methodists require the same thing?
-Do any Catholics fast every day instead of just on Ash Wednesday and every Friday?
-What are some good examples for lent?

What does the United Methodist Church require for Ash Wednesday?
I am Lutheran and like Catholics we celebrate Ash Wednesday. I will be unable to attend my home church tomorrow evening due to a prior commitment. The only church where I work that will be holding Ash Wednesday services on my lunch break is a Roman Catholic Church. I understand that I will not be able to take the Eucharist being that I am not Catholic (not a problem for me and I certainly understand.) However, would I be able to receive ashes on my forehead even though I am not Catholic? My friend, who is Catholic, says I will but I want to be sure.

Thanks

Ash Wednesday/Catholic Question?
Ash Wednesday, what is the appropriate response to the priest when he says ” You come from dust, so shall you return to dust ” as the ash is applied to the forehead ?

Ash Wednesday, what is the response to the priest when he says….?
(e.g. food to eat and not to eat)?

Are there do’s and dont’s when you get to have your forehead signed with a cross on Ash Wednesday?
What is the order for the ashes being placed upon the head? I can’t remember if it comes early on or it’s last. I have to know, due to another person’s commitment that I may have to leave 15 minutes early. I know how important receiving the Eucharist is, but I really desire the Ashes too. Roman Catholic, please.

A question about Ash Wednesday Mass?
If you could provide a little information of what Ash Wednesday mean to you that would be great too. Thanks Sarah, that was very informative. I am glad that you felt the need to share.

Do you celebrate Ash Wednesday, and what church do you attend?
I am a fifth grader and some of the things I ABSOLUTELY cannot give up is….
1. Ice Cream
2. Pizza
3.Computer Time
Please give my some ideas! Ash Wednesday is tomorrow ( 2-17-10) and I need something to give up, QUICK!

What are some good things to give up for Lent?
I know it has to do with Lent and Ash Wednesday, so is Mardi Gras a holiday of the Catholic Church? If so, why would a holiday dealing with debauchery and gluttony be celebrated religiously?
